Shivering is a natural body reaction that usually occurs when you feel cold. However, sometimes you can shiver even if you are not exposed to cold temperatures. How to Stop Body Shivering

When the body is exposed to hot or cold temperatures, the body has a natural reaction. For example, when the body feels hot the body will sweat and when the body feels cold the body will shiver. However, the cold is not the only cause of the body shivering. Shivering can also be caused by other factors, such as stress, infection, or certain illnesses. Shivering may also occur with or without fever.

Cause Body Shivering

Shivering can occur because the muscles contract repeatedly to increase body temperature. Usually this happens when the ambient air temperature is too cold. However, shivering is only able to warm the body for a moment. After a while, the muscles of the body will be tired to contract because the blood sugar which is the source of energy has been used up.

In addition, not everyone shivers if they are in a place with the same temperature. For example, children shiver more easily when they are in a place where the temperature is warm for adults. This is because children have less body fat tissue when compared to adults.

Apart from the cold temperature, what can cause body shivering? Body shivers can also be caused by several things including:

1. Infection

When your body is shivering but you are not exposed to cold temperatures, this can be a sign that your body is fighting a bacterial or viral infection. Shivering is a mechanism by the immune system to increase body temperature to fight off bacteria or viruses. Usually this condition is accompanied by fever.

As for some examples of diseases that can make the body shiver, including flu, dengue fever, diarrhea, sore throat, urinary tract infections, pneumonia and meningitis.

2. Low blood sugar

Low blood sugar levels can also cause the body to shiver. This condition can occur if you do not eat food in a long time or are on a diet in the wrong way.

3. Disorders of the hypothalamus in the brain

Body temperature is regulated by the hypothalamus which is located in the brain. If the function of the hypothalamus is disturbed, for example, if you have a severe head injury, a tumor, then the regulation of body temperature will be disturbed. This can increase the risk of people with hypothalamic disorders experiencing hypothermia.

Hypothermia is a condition in which the body temperature drops drastically to below 35 degrees Celsius. Severe hypothermia is characterized by symptoms of body shivering, decreased body response, speech disturbances, and even decreased consciousness.

4. Thyroid disorders

With age, the body's sensitivity to cold temperatures can change. In addition, the body's sensitivity to cold temperatures is also affected by health problems, such as thyroid disorders. People with hypothyroidism tend to shiver more easily than someone who doesn't have hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is a condition when the thyroid gland is unable to produce enough hormones. The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck.

5. Side effects of using anesthetics during surgery

Uncontrolled shivering can also occur due to the use of general anesthesia during surgery. This is because the use of general anesthesia can affect the body's ability to regulate temperature. In addition, lying in a cold surgery room for a long time can also decrease body temperature.

6. Afraid

Sometimes the body shivering has nothing to do with exposure to cold temperatures or health problems, but because of an emotional reaction. When someone is afraid, there will be an increase in the hormone adrenaline which can make the body shiver. If you ever feel scared until your body trembles, it is a response to an increase in the hormone adrenaline in the bloodstream.

How to Stop Body Shivering Immediately

When your body is shivering, you can try to do a few things about how to reduce body shivering:

1. Wear thick clothes

If your shivering is caused by exposure to cold temperatures, warm yourself up by wearing thick clothes or sweaters. Position yourself in a warm place or you can turn on the air conditioner which is set to a warm temperature.

2. Drink warm ginger

Since the first warm ginger drink is believed to warm the body. Ginger has a slightly spicy taste and a hot sensation. Therefore, ginger is believed to warm the body and can overcome body shivers.

3. Consuming foods high in carbohydrates

Consuming foods that are high in carbohydrates such as rice, bread, or bananas can help raise blood sugar so that it can relieve symptoms of the body shivering.

4. Drink lots of water
